Even Grandma had struggled to sew spheres. The shape Hannah affixed to the top of the form was not entirely like a head. The muslin was too pale, and the scraps she had used to stuff it showed through as if she were looking at a ghost.

Hannah took a marking pencil from the button-pull drawer and sketched a face onto the fabric. She placed a hat on top to hide the unnatural bulges. A black hat, to match the dress.

She filled two gloves with more scraps and fastened them to the ends of the cuffs with straight pins.

She pushed the post of the single gold earring through the center of Grandma’s right eye. Grandma’s eyes always twinkled.

Hannah admired her work. It was Grandma—the form of her, so close that Hannah’s nose began to tickle and her eyes stung.

She hugged the form and kissed her cheek.

Grandma’s kisses smelled like pencil clay, and the pins in the cuffs stuck her when they hugged, but Hannah’s heart was lighter when she went to bed.

If Hannah could, herself, make a Grandma, then surely the doctors could make her whole again.
